Referral Fees

It is important for clients and fellow attorneys to understand the importance of a referral fee relationship and how it works. Often, when a person is looking for an attorney to help them with a personal injury crisis, the individual’s first call is to an attorney that has assisted with a past legal need, e.g., the attorney that helped prepare the person’s trust, or navigate a tricky real estate transaction, or start their business. The client has relied on the expertise of this attorney in the past and has confidence in their advice. The attorney, in turn, is eager to assist the individual by recommending a competent attorney who has the appropriate experience and expertise in personal injury law.

Other times, the first attorney a potential client contacts cannot accept the case for a variety of reasons. Rather than simply reject the client, if the case is meritorious, a referral to a trusted attorney is appropriate.

Referral fees provide advantages to all involved parties. The client receives the peace of mind of knowing they are being referred to a skilled attorney who has a proven track record for success. The referring attorney benefits by providing a significant service to their client/friend/colleague by recommending an accomplished and knowledgeable personal injury attorney, and in turn, receives a referral fee for making the recommendation. The personal injury attorney is benefitted by gaining a new client.
