Attorney Profile

Jeff Atterbury

Jeff Atterbury grew up in Texas until the age of 12 when he moved to San Jose, California, with his entire family. Growing up, he attended Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose and thereafter attended the University of California at Santa Barbara where he graduated in 1996 with a degree in Law & Society.

Following graduation, Jeff worked as a claims adjuster for the California State Automobile Association (AAA) for the next three years. Tiring of the work as a claims adjuster, Jeff eventually decided he wanted to pursue the legal field and thus attended Santa Clara University School of Law in 2000. He graduated from SCU Law in 2003 and joined the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office as a freshly minted misdemeanor prosecutor. Later he would transfer and work at the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office—he would spend the first 8 years of his professional life as an attorney at these two offices These early decisions had a transformative impact on Jeff’s career trajectory.

It was at the DA’s Office where Mr. Atterbury first learned the highly detailed intricacies of courtroom litigation, evidence law, and how to be a trial attorney. Over the course of these 8 years as a prosecutor, Jeff conducted over 60 jury trials to verdict. Nothing replaces real work, hands-on experience in the courtroom, and Jeff learned an incredible amount about how to present a winning case to a jury during his time there.

Returning to his insurance roots, Mr. Atterbury eventually found himself coming full circle, as has moved on to work as a trial attorney at a major insurance company for the next 6 years. While there, he worked as a defense attorney, handling injury lawsuits filed by people involved in motor vehicle collisions and other types of unfortunate accidents. During this time, he learned the dynamics involved in how insurance companies defend, value and settle their cases. Knowing their tactics, Jeff is now in a position to use the insurance industry’s own strategies against them to further his injured client’s interests. Jeff completed over 20 jury trials during his time as in-house counsel for the insurance company.

After some time, working on behalf of the insurance industry left Mr. Atterbury feeling a bit hollow and unfulfilled. As such, Jeff was convinced by a colleague to join a law firm that advocated on behalf of injured people, helping them try to regain their footing in life after suffering a disastrous injury setback that was no fault of their own. Jeff would spend the next 5 years working as an advocate for injured people, fighting for them relentlessly in court and using his insider knowledge to leverage generous settlements from the insurance companies. Jeff performed 3 jury trials to verdict while at this firm, one of which resulted in a verdict in excess of $800,000.

Mr. Atterbury is excited to work for Ms. Burneikis at her well established and successful law firm, that is dedicated solely to helping injured people attempt to restore their lives. Many clients will find they have been inundated with medical bills, missed work, endless pain, sleepless nights, stress and depression that often comes from being hurt by the negligent actions of others. With his thorough insurance industry knowledge, aggressive litigation style, and proven courtroom results, Jeff is always ready to fight alongside Ms. Burneikis for the just compensation our clients deserve.

Jeff is a current member of the Santa Clara County Trial Lawyers Association and the American Association for Justice. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his young son, volunteering at school, camping, water sports, reading books and fitness.
